The Best Wooden Jigsaw Puzzles for Adults

Artwork, ingenious shapes and wooden puzzles worth a closer look.

I’m Geoff, former Director of Product Development at Gibsons Games. This guide focuses on the artwork, puzzle shapes and manufacturer information that can help you choose a wooden jigsaw.

Design selections, not a tested ranking. I haven’t yet tested the featured puzzles hands-on.

These are additional examples, separate from the provisional eight designs above.

The original guide also featured Wentworth’s Harry Potter range. Browse the current range for available editions; the previous undated discount is not repeated.

Wooden puzzles for children

Four provisional recommendations, covering chunky inset puzzles and interlocking jigsaws. Match the format and manufacturer’s age guidance to the child.

Children’s specialists: what earns a place here

Compare the evidence behind the product: piece shape and finish, an explicit age range, identified materials and documented testing. These details are more useful than a blanket claim that wooden toys are safer or that one brand is always better.

Compare the children’s specialists: materials, sourcing and finish
ManufacturerDesign & quality detailSustainability evidencePaint, glue & testing
Bigjigs ToysWooden toy specialist; smooth, chunky pieces on the featured puzzle.Featured product is described as FSC-certified.Product page states non-toxic paint and European safety compliance; test reports not inspected.

Melissa & DougChildren’s toy maker; interlocking jigsaws with sorting and storage features.FSC-certified materials claim limited to new inventory; check the actual stock. No specific finish or test-report evidence verified for this product for this candidate.

Children’s ranges from jigsaw makers

Wentworth’s children’s range includes formats with pieces sized for younger puzzlers.

Liberty’s Little Liberty range includes Baby Steps: 94 pieces, larger pieces and child-themed whimsies, recommended for ages 5–9.

Keep the evidence specific

State each product’s age, format and materials. FSC concerns sourcing; it does not establish paint or glue safety.

Artifact’s two featured adult examples are labelled 15+. They are adult selections; other products need their own explicit age rating.

Manufacturer descriptions are linked on the four cards. Materials and finish statements are attributed claims, not independent safety findings. Check the selected edition and age marking before buying.

Compare the manufacturers

Start with the design, then compare the cut, finish, size and delivery cost. Piece count alone is a poor guide to difficulty when edges and connectors are deliberately unusual.

More makers, custom puzzles and existing comparisons

Stave offers a hand-cut alternative; Unidragon and StumpCraft are also represented in the whimsy examples below. For custom work, explore Wentworth and Liberty, or independent personalised-puzzle makers. Compare the quoted delivery, taxes and missing-piece policy for your country before ordering.

The original manufacturer comparison is retained below as reference. Its prices and specifications have not been refreshed for this layout.

Wood & thickness

What the board contributes

Material, thickness and finish all affect the feel of the pieces. Plywood has bonded layers; fibreboard is a different construction. Compare the exact product specification rather than assuming every wooden puzzle uses the same board.

Wooden pieces are rigid, but fine projections can still break. More thickness does not automatically mean a more interesting or better-made puzzle.

Hand cutting & laser cutting

With hand cutting, the maker guides the board around a saw blade. A laser follows a designed cutting path, making intricate repeated shapes possible. Laser-cut edges may be darker than the face of the board.

The cut matters as much as the picture: false edges, unusual connectors and groups of pieces can change how you solve it.

Whimsies & shaped pieces

Whimsies are pieces cut into recognisable shapes. Compare examples from the featured makers, including designs where several pieces form a larger figure.

Existing Wentworth and Liberty photographs are shown below. Other close-ups await permission; cuts can vary by edition and size.

Photographs are examples of actual pieces. Where the original article did not record the edition or photographer, that attribution remains unresolved.

Artwork & artists

Eight artists to explore, from classic paintings and Japanese prints to contemporary illustration. Browse by artist, then compare the available wooden puzzle versions.

A provisional editorial shortlist, not a popularity ranking. Compare the artwork as well as the cut: the same painting can make quite different puzzles.

Artist names and example titles are given on each card. Image gaps remain marked until a usable asset and permission are documented.

Caring for & displaying your puzzle

Storage

Keep the pieces dry and return them to their bag or box. Lift fine shapes gently and keep the box label with the puzzle, especially if you plan to lend it.

Display

Keep the finished picture out of direct sunlight. Check the maker’s advice about backing and framing; a removable frame lets you enjoy assembling it again.

Before gluing

Check whether the manufacturer recommends adhesive for that board and finish. Gluing is a permanent choice and may spoil the surface or prevent future solving.

A short history of wooden jigsaws

Early wooden jigsaws developed from maps mounted on wood and cut into sections. Later puzzles added pictures and recognisable figural pieces. Today hand-cut and laser-cut puzzles continue that combination of illustration and inventive shapes.
