Amsterdam Centraal
The station and waterfront, around 1900 and today.

THEN — Around 1900
Amsterdam Centraal opened in 1889, built on three new islands beside the IJ. In this circa-1900 view, Cuypers' long red-brick station rises behind Stationsplein, with two towers and three tall central arched windows. A bridge crosses the Open Havenfront, where boats sit by the banks and horse-drawn transport approaches the station. In the foreground, travellers greet one another, a porter tends the luggage and pedestrians pause among the greenery. These small encounters are imagined, but the station, bridge and waterfront are based on photographs from the period.

NOW — Today
Amsterdam Centraal still anchors the city-centre waterfront, but the approach has changed dramatically. The De Entree redevelopment, completed in 2023, enlarged the Open Havenfront and renewed the tram area, with bicycle parking built beneath the water. Broad stone quays, pontoons and canal boats now frame the station, while its original towers and arched central windows remain. On the promenade, friends meet, a cyclist stops and a parent and child look across the water. Their activities are imagined; the modern waterfront layout follows a photograph taken in May 2024.
