Barcelona — La Boqueria — Time & Place

Barcelona — La Boqueria — 1907 illustrated interpretation — THEN — 1907

THEN — 1907

At La Boqueria in 1907, canvas awnings shade the market's narrow trading passages. A stallholder offers oranges to a customer as other shoppers examine vegetables and carry wicker baskets along the aisle. The market developed from trading on La Rambla, and its familiar Modernist entrance arch and iron roof were not yet in place; those arrived in 1913 and 1914. This colourful scene is an original oil-style illustration, not a record of a particular market day. The people, produce arrangement and individual stalls are imagined, informed by photographs and historical accounts.

NOW — 2025

By 2025, La Boqueria is a covered market with bright produce stalls and busy aisles. Beneath the iron-and-glass roof, a trader hands a bag of oranges to a customer while another shopper selects vegetables nearby. Bananas, pineapples, peppers and citrus fruit provide much of the colour, with overhead lights and baskets adding detail. The market's permanent metal roof was built in 1914, and the selling area was remodelled between 1998 and 2001. This painting is an original contemporary interpretation: the people and precise stall arrangement are fictional rather than a documented moment in 2025.

These are illustrated interpretations, not exact historical reconstructions. Some buildings, planting, boats or stall details remain unverified; people and activities are imagined.
