Manchester — Piccadilly Gardens
The gardens in 1955 and August 2025.

THEN — 1955
In 1955, Piccadilly Gardens offered a break from Manchester’s busy streets. This summer scene shows people chatting on benches, reading newspapers and settling into striped deckchairs beside the flowerbeds. The original gardens were sunken below street level, with paths, planted borders and traffic beyond the hedges. For office workers, it was somewhere to spend a lunchtime without leaving the city centre. The people and conversations are imagined, and some background buildings and planting details remain unverified. This is an original oil-style illustration of the period, not an exact historical reconstruction.

NOW — August 2025
By summer 2025, Piccadilly Gardens looked very different. The old sunken gardens had long since been replaced by open lawns, paved routes and low stone edges. Here, friends stop for a coffee while others read, stroll or relax on the grass. Contemporary clothes, trees and passing city-centre transport provide a contrast with the 1955 picture. Manchester City Council announced plans for further planting and changes in October 2025; those planned improvements are not represented as completed. Some façades, planting and monument details remain unverified. This is an illustrated interpretation, not an exact reconstruction.
